Nisar Admonishes Trump Over Dr Afridi’s Case

On Monday, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan expressed disapproval of the comments made by US presidential front-runner Donald Trump and declared “the fate of Shakeel Afridi will only be decided by Pakistani courts”.

The minister’s outburst was a result of the response Donald trump gave when asked if he will free the Pakistani doctor who is in jail now for helping the US raid Osama bin Laden’s hideout in Abbottabad in 2011 if he got elected during a recent interview with Fox News.

The presidential hopeful responded that he would free Shakeel Afridi, saying, “I think I would get him out in two minutes,”

Trump was also asked how he would free Dr Afridi and he replied, “I would tell them let him out and I’m sure they would let him out.”

Dr Adridi is considered a hero in the US for assisting US efforts to track down Osama Bin Laden but is currently serving a 23-year prison term in Pakistan.

President Barack Obama signed a bill that proposed to hold back $33 million from aid to Pakistan over Dr Afridi’s detention back in January 2014.

The issue of Afridi’s detention has been brought up in congress every time a budget proposal for Pakistan is brought up.

Just last week, the US Congress withdrew funds for an F-16 deal to compel Pakistan to do something against the Haqqani network and currently contemplating another cut to influence Pakistan to release Dr Shakil Afridi.

Interior Minister, Chaudhry Nisar affirmed, “Shakeel Afridi is a Pakistani citizen and nobody else holds the right to dictate to us about his future,”

He also stated that Pakistan is not a colony of the United States, contrary to Trump’s misconception, saying, “He should learn to treat sovereign countries with respect,”

The interior Minister added that Trump seems to be historically ignorant of the fact that Pakistan has stood with and supported US policies over the years has made huge sacrifices for it.
