Former chairman of Balochistan Public Service Commission arrested by NAB

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) is currently interrogating and taking action against those who conducted financial corruption or irregularities in government departments in Balochistan.

Most recently the ex-chairman of the Balochistan Public Service Commission, Mohammad Ashraf Magsi, was arrested by NAB over charges of irregularities and illegal appointments.

Magsi served as the chairman of the commission but he was sacked by the Balochistan Governor Muhammad Khan Achakzai in November, 2014, when it became apparent that he had attracted the attention of the Bureau. Even back then, NAB had initiated an inquiry against him for recruiting officers in violation of merit four years ago.

Magsi had been accused of recruiting officers above grade 17 in violation of merit. It was also reported that he had taken bribes from the candidates in order to facilitate their illegal appointments.

Magsi had also employed two of his daughters in grade 17 for the Balochistan Education Department, but their contracts was terminated with NAB found their degrees to be fake.

This time around, Magsi was picked up by NAB officers in a raid on his residence and later transferred to NAB headquarters for interrogation. It is being speculated that NAB now wants names of other people involved in such irregularities.

Magsi’s arrest comes just days after NAB arrested Balochistan Finance Secretary, Mushtaq Ahmed Raisani for embezzling millions of rupees from local and government development funds. It was reported that Raisani is likely to spill the beans and other prominent government officials will also be captured for their wrongdoings.
