Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif recently met up with the United States (US) Ambassador to Pakistan David Hale and conveyed his grave concern over the US drone strike in Balochistan. The strike resulted in the death of Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Akhtar Mansour.

Both the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif and the COAS were informed of the strike by the US, after it had taken place.

During the meeting with Hale, General Sharif said that the drone strike was not only a violation of the sovereignty of Pakistan but it was also detrimental to the Pak-US ties. In addition to that, the regional stability will also be compromised because of this attack and the peace efforts with the Taliban will be hindered.

The COAS further reiterated Pakistan’s efforts, successes and the sacrifices which have been made in the War Against Terror, which started after the 9/11 attack.

According to the details provided, Hale called on the Army Chief at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi. During his visit there, the situation after the US drone strike in Balochistan came up as a point of discussion.

Mullah Akhtar Mansour was considered as a major hindrance in the peace talks by the US. According to some sources, Present Barack Obama had given the go-ahead to target Mansour weeks before.

The Taliban leader’s death has been confirmed by the Afghan Taliban and a new chief has been named in his place.
