New CII Bill gives husband the permission to beat wives

A new bill prepared by the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) gives husbands the liberty to ‘lightly beat’ their wives in order to discipline them. The CII comprises of Pakistan’s top clerical body and if the proposed bill is passed and legislated into law, it will hold women accountable for many things, while also giving them certain liberties.

The bill was prepared in a three-day long meeting in Islamabad and it was headed by CII member Mufti Imdadullah. The draft of the bill contains 163 clauses and once it is finalized, it will be sent to all provincial assemblies and the National Assembly for legislation and final recommendations on it by the council’s chairman.

According to the draft of the bill prepared so far, women will be empowered with all Shariah rights and will have the option to take part in political process and even become judges in courts. However, women will be barred from working in ‘indecent advertisements’ that can cause ‘social harm’.

The bill will also hold women liable to breastfeed their children for at least two years of age. Commercials for substitute milk for infants will also be banned as it encourages alternatives to breast milk.

A very surprising clause of the bill allows adult and consenting girls to get married to the person of their choice without their guardian’s consent. However, women nurses will not be allowed to attend to male patients.

The bill also prohibits women to practice dance, music and sculpture in the name of art and mixing freely with non-relatives will also be punishable.
