The 25-year-old Muhannad was assembling a donated cupboard when he discovered €50,000 in cash and savings books containing more than €100,000 hidden under a board while assembling the furniture. Instead of keeping the money which could have him sorted for the future, Muhannad decided to return it to the authorities.
Muhannad was skeptical at first so he took to the internet to find out if they money was in fact real. When he was convinced that what he had was real money, he handed it over to the local authorities who then gave it to the police.
When the incident gained traction, a lot of media reporters came to the Syrian refugee for an interview. When one of the reporters asked him why he returned the money, Muhannad said that his religion Islam would never allow him to use this money. “Allah would never allow me to finance my own interests with someone else’s wealth,” he said.
