Twin blasts rock Kabul killing 24 people

Twin suicide bomb blasts by the Taliban have created havoc in the capital city of Afghanistan during late afternoon rush hour. The twin blasts took place near the Defense Ministry during one of the busiest hours of the day, resulting in huge casualties.

The attack comes at a time when the Taliban increase their nationwide offensive against the government, which they claim is backed by the US. The attack comes just ten days after suicide bombers overtook Kabul University and killed students.

According to the details of the incident provided, two suicide bombers blew themselves up one after the other. The attack came at a time when the government officials were leaving the ministry after work.

“The first explosion occurred on a bridge near the defense ministry. When soldiers, policemen and civilians rushed to the scene, there was the second explosion,” defense ministry spokesman Mohammad Radmanish told AFP.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said on Twitter that the defense ministry was the first target of the suicide bombers while the police were targeted in the second blast.

According to the health ministry figures, the attack left 24 people dead while 91 others were badly wounded. It is feared that the casualties could increase further as the critically wounded also lose their battle with life.

The president of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani has strongly condemned these attacks and offered his condolences to the families of the blast victims. “The enemies of Afghanistan have lost their ability to fight the Security and Defense Forces of the country,” Ghani said in a statement.

“That is why they are attacking highways, cities, mosques, schools and common people,” he added.
