Theme parks are place of family fun and entertainment, so naturally when a tragedy takes place at these places, everyone is shocked and saddened.

One such tragedy took place at Australia’s Dreamworld theme park, which is the country’s biggest theme park located on the Gold Coast tourist district in Queensland state.

According to the details of the incident provided, two men and two women were killed on a ride called the Thunder Rivers Rapids family ride, after the ride malfunctioned. The victims were reportedly aged between 32 through to their early 40s, and they reportedly belonged to a single family.

“One of the rides had sustained some sort of malfunction causing two people to be ejected from the ride,” Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman Gavin Fuller said.

“Another two people were caught inside the ride – two males and two females,” he added.

So far it is not known what exactly happened, but aerial footage of the ride showed one of the water ride’s six-seat circular rafts flipped on the conveyor belt. One of the eye witnesses actually saw the raft flip to one side as it was going towards the boarding and disembarking area.

The park immediately shut down after the incident and park owner Ardent Leisure announced that Dreamworld would remain closed the next day. Shares of the theme park also took a tumble after the incident as they fell 7.8 percent after the news of the tragedy.

The Thunder River Rapids Ride is the country’s only river rapids ride and it opened in December 1986. Since then, this is the first time the ride has malfunctioned, resulting in such a huge tragedy.
