Now that Trump is the president of US, people look to move to Canada, New Zealand

After a major upset in the 2016 US presidential elections, Donald Trump became the 45th president of the United States, leaving many people shocked. Due to his intolerance against Muslims and immigrants in general, expressed through his speeches, a lot of people are now considering America as an unsafe place for them to live, prompting them to look at other options.

Canada’s main immigration website appeared to crash due to the heavy traffic whereas New Zealand also reported increased traffic to its website for residency visas from U.S. nationals shortly after it became imminent that Trump would be the next president.

New Zealand’s immigration officials told reporters that on the evening of the vote, New Zealand’s immigration website called New Zealand Now, had received 1,593 registrations from United States citizens since November 1, which is more than 50 percent of a typical month’s registration in just seven days.

Visits to the website had increased to 41,000, which is almost 80 percent more than the visits during the same period last year. These numbers show the increased interest of US residents in New Zealand as a place to stay.

Meanwhile a New Zealand-based global accounting software company by the name of Xero reported that interest in the company’s job vacancies from US residents had increased considerably. Rod Dury, the chief executive of Xero talked to reporters saying that what had started out as a joke, regarding Trump becoming a president, actually turned into reality.

“I’ve got lots of messages coming through at the moment asking for a job in New Zealand, and we’re saying ‘yes you can’,” Drury told Reuters by telephone on Wednesday.

“It will be interesting to see whether it translates into real action, it’s an active conversation that moved to getting more serious and we’ll see what will happen in the next month.”
