Modi likely to start water wars with Pakistan

Indian Prime Minister Nerandra Modi is likely to irritate Pakistan using the Indus Water Treaty as evidenced by his latest speech. While addressing an audience at the inauguration ceremony at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Bhatinda, Modi made some remarks which hinted at him not allowing water to Pakistan.

“The fields of our farmers must have adequate water. Water that belongs to India cannot be allowed to go to Pakistan…Government will do everything to give enough water to our farmers,” Modi was quoted as saying.

The Indus Water Treaty is a water-sharing treaty which was signed between India and Pakistan in 1960 with the help of the World Bank. According to the treaty, India can use water from the three eastern rivers Sutlej, Beas and Ravi while Pakistan had exclusive rights over the three western rivers Indus, Chenab and Jhelum.

However, Modi now plans to use water from the western rivers as well.

“We formed a task force on Indus Water Treaty to ensure farmers of Punjab and other states get each drop of water due to them,” Modi added.

It was also reported that Modi set a December deadline for the country’s Central Electricity Authority to complete the techno-economic appraisal which will check the viability of about six hydroelectric projects on the Chenab. The project has already been pending for a year, but now Modi wants work on it completed.

It was also reported that the Indian government decided to use more water from the Indus Basin rivers. However, that usage remained within the limitations of the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan.

Meanwhile Pakistan has warned that India cannot unilaterally change or revoke any of the clauses of the treaty and if it does, then Pakistan will not sit quietly.
