Donald Trump could not keep himself from retaliating to Meryl Streep’s covert remarks about him during her acceptance speech at the Golden Globe awards. The president-elect called Streep an ‘overrated actress’ after the three-time Oscar winner condemned him for the imitation of a disabled reporter back in 2015.
Meryl Streep was bestowed with the Cecil B DeMille lifetime achievement award for her acting skills. However, instead of thanking the people in her life or talking about acting, Streep turned her speech into a blistering attack on Trump.
Even though Streep did not mention Trump’s name during the speech, everyone knew who she was referring to as she hinted at an incident which took place during Trump’s rally at South Carolina which took place in 2015. In that rally, Trump flailed his arms and slurred his words, in order to ridicule a New York Times reporter Serge Kovaleski, who is physically disabled.
“This instinct to humiliate when it’s modelled by someone in the public platform by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life,” Streep said.
Responding to the speech, Trump wrote on Twitter: “Meryl Streep, one of the most overrated actresses in Hollywood, doesn’t know me but attacked last night at the Golden Globes. “She is a Hillary flunky who lost big.”
This was the second time that Trump responded to the speech publicly as earlier on Monday, he said during a telephonic interview; “People keep saying I intended to mock the reporter’s disability, as if Meryl Streep and others could read my mind, and I did no such thing.”
During her speech, Streep also asked her fellow actors and actresses to stand strong against any attacks and to support a free press.
