An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Monday sentenced a woman to death for killing her own daughter after she eloped and married a man on her choice. The incident took place in June 2016, and the decision was just taken on Monday by a court in Lahore.

Parveen Bibi, the girl’s mother admitted in front of the judge that she had killed her daughter for brining shame to the family.

ATC-IV judge Azam Chaudhry on Monday sentenced Parveen to death in the ‘honour killing’ case, and sentenced Zeenat’s brother Anees to life in prison.

According to the details of the incident provided, 18-year-old Zeenat Rafiq was burnt alive by her mother Parveen Bibi in Lahore’s Factory Area in June 2016. Zeenat had eloped with a man named Hasan Khan and later married him.

Zeenat’s family was infuriated over her actions but they pretended to forgive her and asked her to come back to her home so that she could be given a proper wedding reception. The girl fell for the trap and she returned to her home just a week after her marriage.

When she came back, her mother, helped by her son and son-in-law, set Zeenat on fire. It was revealed that Parveen and her son first beat Zeenat and then her mother threw kerosene on her and set her on fire.

The neighbors heard the girl’s cries and saw smoke rising from the victim’s house after which police and fire brigade was called. The officials were able to recover Zeenat’s charred body from the fire.

Zeenat’s own family refused to claim her body and she was later buried by her husband’s family.
