The mastermind behind the terrible attack at a nightclub in Istanbul has been captured by the Turkish police. The suspected militant has been identified as Abdulgadir Masharipov and he was responsible for killing 39 people at a famous nightclub in Istanbul, who had gathered to ring in the New Year.

According to the Turkish media reports, Masharipov was arrested from an apartment in the Esenyurt district of Istanbul after a massive police operation. He was found there with his four-year-old son, who has since been taken into protective custody. The attacker had been on the run for the past two weeks and the Turkish authorities had deployed all efforts to track and arrest him.

After opening fire at the revelers at famous Reina nightclub in Istanbul, Masharipov had disappeared into the night and there had been no trace of him since then. The police had traced Masharipov three days prior to his arrest but they secretly monitored him to identify more people with whom he might have been involved. Then at 12:15 am local time on Tuesday, a joint operation carried out by the Turkish police and the spy agency MIT, resulted in Masharipov’s arrest.

Masharipov was initially thought to be a Kyrgyz national, but it was later found out that he is an Uzbek belonging to the Central Asian Islamic State (IS) cell. Pictures of a bloody and bruised Masharipov were seen on Turkish news channels as police officials led him away.

Earlier, the IS group took responsibility for the Turkish nightclub massacre. This was the first time that the group openly claimed a major attack in Turkey.
