Fans heartbroken as central censor board bans the screening of Raees

Mahira Khan and Shahrukh Khan’s fans were heartbroken as news hit the waves regarding the ban imposed on the screening of the movie Raees in cinemas across Pakistan.

Just as the government had lifted the ban of screening Indian movies in Pakistan, fans were eagerly awaiting the screening of Raees which was due to be released in the second week of February in Pakistan.

Apparently, the Punjab and Sindh censor boards had passed the film without any cuts but then they decided to issue the clearance certificate after consulting with the Central Board of Film Censors in Islamabad. After reviewing the movie in a full-board meeting, it was decided that Raees would not be issued a certificate ‘for inappropriate content’. Apparently, the movie is ‘anti-Islamic’ and ‘anti-Pakistan’, due to which it was banned.

A source privy to the issue said that after the 18th Amendment, the Sindh and Punjab boards did not need to consult with Islamabad nor did the central board have any say over the provincial boards.

“This is very unusual,” the source added. “The Sindh and Punjab boards are independent. The central board claims that the film is anti-Islam and anti-Pakistan.”

So far, the lead Pakistani actress in the film, Mahira Khan, has not made any comment on the ban of the movie.

Meanwhile, the screening of Indian movies has already resumed in Pakistani cinemas and these days Hritik Roshan’s Kaabil is running in multiplexes across the country.

Talking to reporters about the Raees ban, Mandviwalla Entertainment Chief Executive Nadeem Mandviwalla said, “The government has found it unfit for exhibition, so it is unfit for exhibition. The members of the Censor Board debated the subject therefore automatically we have to rely on that. As far as business is concerned, there are other films which are going to be released soon.”
