Clash between two student groups in Punjab University causes mayhem

On Tuesday, clash broke out between two rival student groups in Punjab University (PU) leading to the injury of 18 students. A day after the brawl, police registered a case against the arrested students and now necessary action will be taken against them to ensure such a thing does not happen in the future.

According to the details provided, the case was registered against the arrested students, as well as ‘unknown persons’ at Muslim Town police station on Wednesday.

Yesterday, a cultural show was taken place at the campus when the brawl took place, due to which the university was closed. However, today the PU campus remained open and students were allowed to sit for their exams. All extra-curricular activities were cancelled for today, for fear of another fight taking place between the rival groups.

According to the details of the incident provided, a student group was celebrating their cultural day outside Faisal Auditorium when a rival student group arrived there and started chanting slogans against them. This incited the first group and a full-blown fight took place between both the groups. Enraged students attacked each other with bricks and batons and during the fight 18 students got injured.

Police were called to the scene which resorted to aerial firing and tear gas shelling in order to control the situation. A stall also caught fire when a tear gas exploded near it.

Speaking to media personnel, Punjab Government spokesman Malik Ahmed Khan said that the matter will not be taken lightly and that action will be taken against the miscreants. “Enough is enough, action will be taken against the bullying elements,” he vowed.
