A group of 50 students and their teachers had gone to India as part of a cultural exchange program. However, after receiving death threats from a Hindu nationalist group, the students were immediately sent back to Pakistan.

According to the details provided, a Delhi-based NGO by the name of Route2Roots had invited 50 Pakistani students as part of their student ‘Exchange for Change’ program. Students between the ages of 11 to 15-years of age were part of them program and they crossed the Wagah border on May 1, for a five-day exchange trip. The purpose of the trip was to promote ‘peace and harmony’ but it could have turned into something ugly because the Hindu nationalist group Shiv Sena sent death threats to the NGO.

Shiv Sena relayed the message that the idea of inviting Pakistani students at a time when relations between Pakistan and India are at a bad turn, was a really bad idea. India has blamed Pakistan for killing and mutilating the bodies of two of its soldiers along the LOC.

Keeping in view the safety of the students, the Indian officials asked the NGO to send the students back immediately.

Speaking to a local reporters, one of the students said; “We were having dinner when commotion was raised and our in-charge said announced that we were to head to Pakistan tomorrow, everyone was surprised because we were scheduled to go to Agra to see the Taj Mahal tomorrow… We truly panicked after the announcement,” she said.

Thankfully, the students crossed the Wagah border safely and a catastrophe was averted.
