Hussain Nawaz questions credibility of two investigators part of JIT

The current ruling party of Pakistan, Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) (PML-N), is under the public eye these days due to the Panama Papers case which is underway.

The Prime Minister’s son, Hussain Nawaz, was summoned by the Supreme Court to record his statement in the case. Even though Hussain appeared, he did express his concern over the impartiality of two of the members of the six-member Joint Investigation Team (JIT) which has been formed to decide the case.

Hussain has petitioned the apex court against the alleged bias of two members of the JIT. In response to his request, a special Supreme Court bench which has been formed to oversee the investigation into the Panama case, will hear the PM’s son’s petition.

On Monday, lawyer Khwaja Harris registered himself with the apex court as Hussain’s counsel. In the plea, Hussain has objected to Amer Aziz and Bilal Rasool, who respectively represent the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) in the six-member JIT.

Hussain has claimed that the JIT member from the Security and Exchange Commission of Pakistan, Bilal Rasool, is the nephew of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Mian Azhar. Azhar, a former governor of Punjab, was originally affiliated with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz but later joined the PML-Q and then PTI.

Hussain claims that in a previous case, Amiz Aziz had threatened the premier’s cousin, Tariq Shafi, while investigating him in the Panama case. Aziz also allegedly directed Shafi to take back his sworn statement, according to Hussain’s petition.

So far it is not clear whether these members will be replaced by other ones in the JIT.
