One of the country’s largest brands and an apparel industry giant, Khaadi, has found itself in the middle of a huge social media and public outrage over the treatment of its workers.

A number of workers were fired from Khaadi for raising their voice against the inhumane practices meted out to them in the factory. These workers and other social workers who support their cause, took to the streets and have been staging protest demonstrations in different parts of Karachi and Lahore. The protestors are raising their voice against the arrogance and unfair labor practices by Khaadi’s management.

Some of the charges against the company are that its management terminated a large number of workers who worked at its factories after official promising that it would not do so. In addition to that, the company’s treatment also led one of the female workers to attempt suicide as she was penalized for taking an unscheduled lunch break.

In addition to that, employees are also not provided a copy of their official appointment letter at the time of joining, depriving them of their rights. Khaadi also does not deposit Sindh Employees’ Social Security (SESSI) contributions with the department or issue them with the cards, depriving them of a means of social protection.

In the same way Khaadi makes monthly deductions for Employees Old-Age Benefits (EOBI) contributions from employees’ salaries but does not issue them EOBI cards.

Workers at the factory are also made to work long hours and are allowed only a certain number of bathroom breaks.

These and other such inhumane practices led the workers to raise their voice upon which they were sacked from the company.

Even though Khaadi has released a statement clarifying its stance, not many people are buying it and have asked to boycott the brand.
