British PM handed unemployment notice by prankster during speech

British Prime Minister Theresa May was speaking at her Conservative Party’s annual conference on Wednesday when she was interrupted by someone who handed her a piece of paper. It later turned out that the person was a serial prankster and he had handed May an unemployment notice.

The person who carried out this daring feat was comedian Lee Nelson, whose real name is Simon Brodkin. He walked up to the stage and gave May the unemployment form, which in Britain is known by its reference code P45.

Brodkin claimed Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, who has clashed with May over Brexit, told him to do it.

“Boris said in one of those corridor meetings: ´Give Theresa this´. It was a P45 of course, from Boris,” he told reporters as he was escorted from the conference center in Manchester, northwest England.

“Hi Boris Johnson, I gave Theresa her P45 just like you asked,” he later wrote on Twitter.

As Brodkin was being escorted out of the center, delegates chanted ‘Out! Out!’ and there were big cheers when the doors closed behind him.

Brodkin has a track record of pulling off such pranks with famous people. He once threw a pile of fake dollars at the then world football chief Sepp Blatter during a press conference.

Meanwhile May handled the matter with much grace and made light of the situation with a joke. The interruption came just as she was turning to speak about the opposition Labor leader.

“I was about to talk about someone I want to give a P45 to: Jeremy Corbyn,” she said to a standing ovation.
