Court defers Maryam Nawaz, Safdar’s indictment due to lawyers’ commotion

October 13 was set as the date when Maryam Nawaz and Capt. (Retd) Safdar were to be indicted for the references filed against them. However, the legal fraternity present at the court created such a commotion, that the accountability court judge deferred the indictment to October 19.

Maryam Nawaz and her husband Capt (retd) Safdar reached the judicial complex separately on Friday morning. They were waiting for the hearing to begin when lawyers present outside the court started chanting and fighting with the NAB and security officials present outside the court.

Police had barred non-essential personnel, including lawyers, from entering the complex due to the strict security arrangements in place. However, this led to a scuffle as the lawyers wanted to enter the complex for the proceedings. The scuffle led to the injury of at least one lawyer.

As the hearing started the lawyers started protesting and chanting inside the court. They claimed that Islamabad High Court has allowed lawyers to be present inside the judicial complex as well as the accountability court as ‘it is an open court’.

The lawyers also argued with the deputy attorney general and created a commotion, forcing Judge Mohammad Bashir to leave for his chamber and abort today’s proceedings.

The Islamabad police was later given orders to investigate the incident.

State Interior Minister Tallal Chaudhry, who was present in court, has also taken notice of the incident and ordered an inquiry.

Moreover, the NAB team present in court has updated its headquarters regarding today’s incident.
