US President Donald Trump has publically shared his sentiments about the New York City truck attacker and has called for his execution through death penalty. The Uzbek immigrant, identified as Sayfullo Saipov, is accused of killing eight people by mowing a rental truck down a New York City bike path.
Meanwhile Saipov talked to investigators and told them that he was inspired by watching Daesh videos and began planning the attack a year ago. He further said that he did not regret what he had done and “he felt good about what he had done”. He even asked for permission to display the Daesh flag in his hospital room.
Meanwhile President Trump had initially suggested that Saipov should be sent to the Guantanamo Bay military prison in Cuba where terrorism suspects are usually sent. However, he later said that doing so would make things too complicated.
“Would love to send the NYC terrorist to Guantanamo but statistically that process takes much longer than going through the Federal system,” Trump said on Twitter. He added: “There is also something appropriate about keeping him in the home of the horrible crime he committed. Should move fast. DEATH PENALTY!”
So far hundreds of terror suspects have been sent to Guantanamo Bay prison since 9/11 but only eight have been convicted in military trials or admitted guilt by plea bargains.
Five Argentine tourists, a Belgian woman, a New Yorker, and a New Jersey man were killed in Tuesday’s attack.
It was the deadliest attack that officials labelled terrorism in New York since 2001, when hijackers crashed two passenger planes into the World Trade Center, killing more than 2,600 people.
