Indian teenager slits throat of schoolmate in an attempt to delay exams

A teenager was arrested by Indian police on Wednesday for allegedly slitting the throat of a seven-year-old schoolmate in the hopes that the incident would lead to postponement of exams and parent-teacher meeting.

The incident took place at a private school near Delhi in September and the 16-year-old was arrested after investigations confirmed that he had committed the heinous crime.

Initially, the police had detained a bus conductor over suspicions that he had killed the young boy after he resisted a sex attack. However, a spokesman for the federal investigation confirmed that they had credible evidence against the “academically weak teenager, whose motive was to postpone the examination and a forthcoming parent-teacher meeting”.

“He admitted during questioning that he wanted to shut the school to defer the exams and meeting,” Central Bureau of Investigation spokesman R.K. Gaur said.

The teenager—whose identity will be kept confidential for legal reasons—will be sent to juvenile prison till the time his trial for murder begins. The bus conductor will also remain in custody until he is clear by a court of any wrongdoing.

According to some sources, the teenager was not good in studies and he feared that his poor performance will anger his parents. The case made national headlines and it restarted the debate of how much pressure the schools and parents put on children to excel academically.

Much prestige is placed on academic achievement and children face intense pressure to score good grades. Experts say this has aggravated stress and mental illness among teenagers.
