Indian police arrest senior army officer for killing reporter

A reporter who was covering a story on the corruption taking place in Indian Army was reportedly killed while he was trying to interview one of the officers. A day after the incident, the Indian police have arrested a senior police officer for the murder of the journalist.

Reporter Sudip Dutta Bhaumik was allegedly killed by a junior army officer when he went to a paramilitary base in the northeastern state of Tripura on Tuesday to investigate a story. When he was there, the junior officer was given orders to shoot the journalist by Tapan Debbarman, the commandant of the Second Tripura State Rifles.

Debbarma was arrested on Wednesday on charges of ordering to carry out a murder.

“He (Debbarma) was arrested yesterday and produced before the magistrate. He has been remanded to 10 days of police custody,” local police superintendent Pradeep Dey told AFP on Thursday.

“His security guard Nandu Reang was arrested on Tuesday itself.”

Meanwhile Bhaumik’s editor Subal Kumar Dey talked to reporters and told the press that Bhaumik was murdered because he had written articles against senior officers of the Army and was in the process of writing a new one in which it was alleged that Debbarma was involved in fraud.

In the last three months, three journalists have been killed in India and newspapers in Tripura ran blank editorial pages on Thursday in order to register their protest.

In September, a reporter in the state was lynched by a mob during clashes between police and warring political factions. His mutilated body was found the next day.

Also in September gunmen shot dead renowned journalist Gauri Lankesh in the southern city of Bangalore. It is believed that she was killed because she wrote against the extreme Hindu nationalism.
