Just a day after the United States announced the suspension of all security aid to Pakistan, the Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Khawaja Asif also said that Islamabad’s alliance with Washington is also over and that we could not ‘do more’ in the US’s War on Terror.

“We do not have any alliance” with the US, Khawaja Muhammad Asif said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal on Friday.
“This is not how allies behave,” he added.

President Donald Trump’s administration announced on Thursday that security assistance to Pakistan was on hold till the time the Pakistani government took decisive action against groups include the Afghan Taliban and Haqqani network.

The relations between Pakistan and the US hit an all-time low when President Trump lambasted Pakistan claiming that the country had been lying and deceiving them in exchange for the aid they are getting.

The US accuses Pakistan of providing safe havens to militants who in turn kill American soldiers in Afghanistan. On the other hand, Pakistan claims that the US does not acknowledge all the sacrifices by Pakistan or its role in dismantling the Al-Qaeda network.

In addition to that, Pakistan also sees the US getting closer to India, with the Trump admin even inviting India to take on a bigger role in Afghanistan.

All these moves are pushing Pakistan even closer to China, which has become a very key ally of the country. BMI Research, an economic-analysis firm based in London, said in a report on Friday that the US suspension of aid “will likely accelerate Pakistan’s geopolitical drift towards China”.
