Student groups clash leads to cancellation of cultural event at Punjab University

Two student groups got embroiled in a tussle over a cultural event at the Punjab University, early on Monday morning.

A cultural event by the name of ‘Pioneer Festival’ was set to take place at the university but the clash between the two groups led to the postponement of the event.

According to the university’s administration, a student group attacked another over their preparations for the festival in the Electrical Engineering Department. The students could be seen attacking each other with batons and pelting each other with stones.

The enraged students also set room on fire inside the department and broke a number of windows of cars parked in the university’s premises. When the situation got out of hands, the university authorities called in the police who were able to disperse the students immediately.

Meanwhile the Vice Chancellor of Punjab University took notice of the incident and ordered inquiry into it. Commenting on the incident, he said that the research lab was vandalized during the fight and other property was also damaged. He promised to take strict action against the perpetrators responsible for the incident.

The administration of the university did not allow the media to cover the incident.

This is not the first time the university has made headlines for the wrong reasons. On March 21 last year, as many as 18 students were left wounded due to a clash between rival student groups.

Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah had put the responsibility of the clash on Islami Jamiat Tulba activists. The IJT, on the other hand, had said their camp first came under attack by the rival group.
