Haqqani resigns from his post

The Pakistani ambassador to the United States of America, Husain Haqqani, has recently resigned from his post in wake of some critical accusations that have been made against him.

The accusations made against Haqqani hold the former ambassador responsible for seeking the help of the U.S. in order to exert influence on the Pakistani military after the Americans had raided in the month of May this year for the purpose of killing the
deceased Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. More specifically, the accusations hold Haqqani responsible for holding back the Pakistani military while the Americans were going about their business.

The basis of the accusations that are being made against Haqqani is a memo which mentions that a U.S. based Pakistani businessman named Mansoor Ijaz was asked by Haqqani to pass on the memo to Adm. Mike Mullen. Mullen was the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the
time of the incident. Ijaz has stated that the memo had asked Mullen to provide support in order to stop the Pakistani military from carrying out a coup in return of concessions.

In the wake of these accusations, the political environment in Pakistani has been tingled significantly. The issue has raised anti U.S. feelings in the masses who were already not positively inclined towards the super power. Not only that, Haqqani’s image
in the Pakistani politics has suffered greatly and he is now being views as somewhat of an apologist for the American government.

Apart from the negativity that now prevails for Haqqani among the citizens of Pakistan as well as among the political parties, the former ambassador also faces opposition in the Pakistani military. There has been some speculation that the reason that Haqqani
has resigned from his post is because of the pressure exerted on the government by the key personnel in the Pakistani military in order to expel Haqqani out of the bureaucratic circle.

Not only that, it is also speculated that the President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari has decided to distance himself from the whole affair so that any negativity is not shed on his person. Previously, Haqqani was known to be a close aide of the President
of Pakistan.
