The secret tunnels of Lahore

Lahore is also known as ‘’The Walled City of Lahore’’, ‘Old City’ or “Anderoon Shehr”. The wall was built in the Mughal Era from to protect the city during battles. Origin of Lahore is uncertain but it is believed that the Historical city is as old as 2,000
BCE.

Lahore occupies a total are of 1772 square kilometre on the planet earth and the total population figure has crossed the ten million mark. There are a total number of 12 entry / exit gates that connects Lahore with other cities of the country.

There are many myths attached to the most historical city of subcontinent and one of the most astonishing of all is the one related to the web tunnels underneath Lahore. Yes you read it right, the tunnels that supposedly were built by Mughals connecting
Lahore Fort with the Shalamar Gardens in Baghbanpura, another one that leads from under fort of Lahore to the Red Fort in Delhi and several other places in the world.

Like most of the main cities including Paris, London and Berlin built the underground tunnels to have an upper hand during wars. All the mentioned cities are now using their underground tunnels for the means of transport as underground trains are used to
serve the purpose.

The story related to Lahore tunnels is normally told by the local guides at Lahore Fort as I was told the story as, “This was where the tunnel began. It headed out in one direction to the Shalamar Gardens and on to Delhi and Srinagar and on the other to
the tomb of Jehangir and his wife Noor Jehan. That was the way Mughal kings used to go from one place to another” as the guide stated.

Guides normally tell those stories to the young visitors as it is easy to scare them from the demons, snakes and scorpions living in the tunnels, in case someone wishes to visit them. If you insist the guide can actually take you further down and this is
the time when it feels like you are actually living the Harry Potter.

The way however is blocked after moving few steps down with a jail like bars by the Government, yes Pakistan’s Government indeed. A further research on the matter steer us towards the labyrinth that touches Peshawar, Depalpur, Gujrat, Multan, Delhi and Srinagar.

If such tunels really exsists underneath Lahore then Mr Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan should think to run metro trains in these tunnels like Paris, London and Berlen.
