It’s even colder when there’s no gas and warmer when there’s no power

Citizens of Rawalpindi and Lahore are finding the cold unbearable due to gas load-shedding, which is set to mirror the power load-shedding of summer.

With temperatures in Islamabad flirting with the freezing point, residents of the major cities in Pakistan might as well resort to using wood and oil to warm their homes it seems that the nation’s gas supply is not able to cope with demand.

Islamabad has hit zero-degrees-centigrade on quite a few occasions in the past few days, going as low as two-degrees below freezing as well. While the people living in the city of diplomats still fared relatively well as compared to their neighbours.

Lahore is experiencing gas load-shedding, which though terrible, is not as bad as what the people in Rawalpindi have to endure. Some areas of the twin city have no gas at all and the cold seem twice as bitter.

It is a wonder how a country such as Pakistan, which has natural resources in abundance, cannot meet the basic needs of its people. If it’s insufficient electricity during summers or the more recent lack of gas in winters, it seems Pakistan just cannot cater
to the needs of its people.

The fact is that in such cases load-shedding is almost accepted as a part of one’s daily routine, in fact it may even dictates the day to day plans people have, but what is unbearable and cruel beyond measure is unannounced load-shedding.

It is also odd, how people complain of having no gas whatsoever in Pindi, while in the neighbouring city, Islamabad, very few had that problem. If there is enough gas to keep one city happy, maybe that supply can be split so that a certain part of the population
does not have to suffer.

Of course, giving recommendations or suggesting solutions for the government is like talking to a brick wall, so for the time being it seems the cold is here to stay for those who have gas heaters, maybe it is time to either move up to electric ones or grab
an axe and start hacking away at the nearest tree for some firewood.
