Parliamentary Committee on National Security seeks replies record

Parliamentary Committee on National Security Wednesday sought the complete record of replies submitted to the Supreme Court by the federation, the army chief, the DG ISI, Hussain Haqqani, Mansoor Ijaz and James Jones in memo case.

On the other hand, Senator Raza Rabbani has categorically said that National Security Committee has the powers to probe memogate issue and no one should have any doubt in this regard.

The parliamentary panel met with Senator Raza Rabbani in the chair in the Parliament House to discuss a single point agenda of controversial memogate issue.

Secretaries to ministries of foreign affairs and defence briefed the committee about the progress made so far in the memogate issue. Foreign Office officials also presented a copy of Hussain Haqqani’s resignation while both ministries presented some other
documents to the committee.

The parliamentary panel asked the authorities concerned to provide the replies of the federation, Army Gen. Ashfaq Pervez Kayani, DG ISI Lt. Gen. Ahmed Shuja Pasha, former ambassador to US Hussain Haqqani, Mansoor Ijaz and former US National Security Advisor,
James Jones.

The committee directed the ministries to contact Attorney General Office for obtaining this record, which has already been presented before the apex court.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Senator Raza Rabbani said that the committee would continue its investigation even the Supreme Court issue a ruling prior to the completion of parliamentary body’s proceedings.

“Committee has nothing to do with any other institution probing the matter,” Rabbani said. The Supreme Court of Pakistan is also hearing the matter of memogate.

The controversy started after Mansoor Ijaz alleged that Hussain Haqqani sent a memogate to Admiral Mike Mullen on behalf of President Asif Ali Zardari.

Rabbani told the media that PML-N members Ishaq Dar and Sardar Mehtab Abbasi voluntarily offered to remain absent during the hearing, as they were also party in the Supreme Court in the memo issue. However, the committee rejected the offer, asking them to
attend all the meetings as per the rules and schedule.

To a question, Rabbani made it clear that Parliamentary Committee on National Security has the powers to probe the issues like memogate. The committee will summon anyone it consider necessary for probe, he maintained.

Earlier, on the PML-N and Aftab Sherpao had raised the objection that the committee had no powers to probe memo issue. Responding to these views, the chairman committee observed, “No one should have raise question over the domain of the committee.”
