Firdous Ashiq Awan resigns as Information Minister, opens up opportunity for PPP

Firdous Ashiq Awan certainly surprised the nation after submitting her resignation during the 100th meeting of the Federal Cabinet under the leadership of Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani at the Governor House in Karachi.

The now former minister for information and broadcasting, resigned for her cabinet post on Sunday afternoon on December 25, 2011, after regarding herself as incapable of keeping the post due to the hectic requirements of the position.

There is no doubt that an information minister needs to tackle a lot of pressure from different circles around the nation and internationally as well, which Firdous Ashiq Awan termed as herself being unable to handle.

The resignation now opens up opportunity for the Federal Government which is headed by the majority elected Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) to fill the position with another member of the parliament which could put them in a better spot to tackle the pressure
from opposition and problems the government is facing at the moment.

At the moment, it is not clear who could be appointed as the new information and broadcasting minister but names of a number of national leaders are suspected to be in the pipeline.

Firdous Ashiq Awan was elected as the member of the National Assembly in 2008 on a PPP ticket and succeeded PPP MNA, Qamar Zaman Kaira, as the information and broadcasting minister. She contested the election in her hometown of Sialkot and defeated the former
Speaker of the National Assembly, Chaudhry Amir Hussain, which shows her capability and approval in the eyes of her people.

Firdous Ashiq Awan added while presenting her resignation to the PM that she sees herself as incapable of continuing as the information minister and expressed her confidence in the party leadership and especially in continuing the vision of President Asif
Ali Zardari.

The resignation is still pending for approval by Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani.
