Bee Movie – An average computer animated flick

Bee Movie is a computer-animated comedy flick which was released on 2nd November, 2007 worldwide. Distributed by Paramount Pictures, the movie features voices of Jerry Seinfeld, Renee Zellweger, Mathew Broderick, Megan Mullally and John Goodman.
It is directed by Simon J. Smith and written and produced by Jerry Seinfeld.

The film centres on Barry B. Benson, a bee who has just graduated from college but is disappointed after finding out that he will have only one job for his entire life, i.e. making honey. Once in Manhattan, he is saved by a florist, Vanessa Bloome, and he
breaks the bee law to thank her. They become friends but Barry soon realises that humans exploit bees to sell the honey they produce. Barry decides to sue humans and poses destructive consequences to nature.

The movie was released on DVD on 11th March, 2008 with both full screen and widescreen formats. It includes alternate endings, two featurettes, lost scenes with full commentary and interactive games. Paramount Pictures released the movie on Blu-ray
Disc on 20th May, 2008.

The $150 million budgeted movie received mixed or average reviews.

Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes report that 51 percent of people gave it unfavourable reviews, based on 166 critics, with an average rating of 5.7 out of 10. The site general consensus states, “Bee Movie has humorous moments, but its awkward premise and
tame delivery render it mostly forgettable.”

The film opened to number two at the box office, behind American Gangster but its gross of $38,021,044 had it more in line with the studios’ lowest-grossing features like Over the Hedge. It had an average of $9,679 from 3,928 theatres. It performed well
in its second weekend as it secured a top spot with only 33 percent drop to $25,565,462. It grossed a total of $287,594,300 with domestic earnings of $126,631,277. Overall the flick was not successful in United States and was number three in the UK box office
lying behind Enchanted and The Golden Compass.

The Bee Movie was nominated in many awards i.e. at Golden Reel Awards, Kids’ Choice Awards and Producers Guild of America. Regardless of failing to clinch any award, it still is a good way to spend time with your family especially your children.
