Gilani contemplates quit to ease pressure on Zardari

Saturday, January 14, 2012: An international Newspaper has reported some close observers at the highest echelon of PPP led government saying that PM Yousuf Raza Gilani may call it a quit to ease pressure on President Asif Ali Zardari.
The newspaper has also claimed of Aitzaz Ahsan a possible candidate to be put into the saddle of premiership.

According to the details, amid the latest statements given by Gilani following Supreme Court’s resolve to dig deeper into the Memogate issue and to identify the culprits, the chasm between military and civil establishment has become
wider, and the army generals, which seem determined to not to topple the present regime through unconstitutional means, have now expressed their willingness to step in if called in by the Supreme Court for the implementation of its orders.

The international newspaper, that actually broke the story, reported, “following the corps commanders’ meeting, a military official told that the general would only step in if asked by the most senior judge in Pakistan.”

The UK based newspaper also claimed that right now, there was no chance of a military coup in the country as “the military is not willing to allow the PPP to become political martyrs.”

The newspaper quoted a military official saying, “We believe in democracy and the Constitution of the country and we are looking towards the Supreme Court. We will consider helping implement (the) court’s decision if civil authorities
fail to implement it.”

These words, attributed to a top military official, are the first signal to the apex court that army general will play their role if called in by the Chief Justice of Pakistan for help under the Article 190.

With regard to PPP led setup, there has been news that the party is planning to sacrifice Gilani to salvage its moral grounds, not only to face the people in the general elections, but also before the apex court and the military.
It has also been learnt that President Asif Ali Zardari has tasked Aitzaz Ahsan, a prominent political figure and leader of the lawyers’ movement to play his role in mending the government’s relations with the Supreme Court. However, Aitzaz himself has denied
of receiving any such request from the President.
