Yousuf Raza Gilani takes a soft tone with the military

The Prime Minister of Pakistan Yousuf Raza Gilani has recently given a statement in which he has stated his stance that and willingness to make amends with the military of the country. This has been done by taking a softer line for the top generals of the
country and sharing his view that tense relations between two of the most powerful institutions of the country will not be in the best interests of Pakistan.

Yousuf Raza Gilani expressed himself on the matter in the following words while he was at the World Economic Forum that took place in Davos, Switzerland: “I want to dispel the impression that the military leadership acted unconstitutionally or violated rules.
We have to be seen on the same page.”

The comments made by the Prime Minister of Pakistan came after a meeting that was held between two of the most senior generals of the country and Yousuf Raza Gilani. The top two military persons who were part of the meeting with the Prime Minister were Chief
of Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and Director General of Inter Services Intelligence Lt Gen Ahmad Shuja Pasha.

The following official statement was released about the meeting after it had reached its close: “Foreign Minister Ms Hina Rabbani Khar, Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, and DG ISI Lt Gen Ahmad Shuja Pasha called on Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza
Gilani at the PM House and held a detailed meeting to discuss the regional security situation.”

The tensions between the civilian government of Pakistan ruled by the Pakistan People’s Party and the military of the country had been mounting for the past few weeks. There were rumours that the military of Pakistan may undertake a coup in order to restore
the state of affairs in the country. Since that time efforts have been made by both sides to calm the situation down and reach common ground for the sake of the well being of the country.

These tensions have coincided with the memo gate scandal that has taken the country in its grip which allegedly holds the government responsible for seeking US help to control the military of Pakistan.
