Nisar blames govt. of collecting ‘Jagga Tax’ in the name of petroleum levy

Islamabad: (Thursday, February 02, 2012) Opposition Leader in the National Assembly, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, while criticizing the government today on the recent hike in the petroleum prices, said that the government was collecting
‘Jagga Tax’ in the name of petroleum levy.

Speaking at the floor of the house, he also accused the government of ‘extorting money out of peoples’ pockets’. He said, “People are being defrauded by giving an impression of increase in international (oil) prices.”

The leader of the opposition lamented the fact that the prices of petroleum products had gone up by over 200 times in last ten years. He suggested that every time a raise in POL is required, it must be debated in the parliament.

He also said that this was the right time for an interim setup to be brought in prior to holding fresh elections.

While suggesting an immediate formation of a neutral and independent election commission, Nisar said that the interim set up should also be free from political affiliations. He said, “The interim set up should neither be of our
choice nor that of government’s.”

Commenting on the 20th amendment in the constitution, he said that the amendment must not favor any particular party rather it should guarantee holding of elections in a fair and transparent manner.
