The dismissal of Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani’s intra court appeal in the contempt of court case has kicked off a debate among the parliamentarians on who could be his successor.

During the last two days, parliamentarians have been discussing the possibility of having a new leader of the house if Gilani loses the slot. The debate has been on in the chambers of various parties and ministers while the members are least interested in the parliamentary proceedings.

According to some circles, Gilani’s successor could be Defence Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar while Syed Khurshid Shah is the second option.

Gilani may face up to six-month imprisonment if he still refuses Supreme Court’s orders to write a letter to the Swiss Government for opening the cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.

The MPs belonging coalition parties are of the view that if Gilani goes off the screen, it does not mean the government will fall, as the ruling coalition has the required strength in parliament to elect a substitute.

However, some opposition members believe it will not be easy for the PPP to win simply majority if Gilani loses the office.

Conversely, it could weak the administration and damage the ruling PPP’s chances in the next general election expected by this year. The PPP’s members are of the view that Gilani should go jail as chief executive and should not step down if the court convicts him.

Although parliamentarians did not speak over the issue openly, they discussed every possibility of the crisis in detail. The common questions were whether the court will convict the premier and who will replace the top executive slot.

Qamar Zaman Kaira while speaking to media said that there was no proposal regarding new prime minister, terming in as only assumption. In his view, every decision would be taken after consultation with party’s core committee if extra ordinary thing happened.

Constitutional expert Senator S.M. Zafar said that the situation was not good and premier could be disqualified by the court in the contempt case.

In his view, the one who will get the top slot will have to face same situation and court will ordered him to write Swiss authorities. “The government has to write a letter otherwise the result will be political chaos,” he maintained.
