The panel which is heading the memo gate scandal has recently asked for the former Pakistani ambassador to the United States, Hussain Haqqani, to make an appearance before the commission on the March 15th. The panel asked for Haqqani after the
key person in the memo gate scandal, Mansoor Ijaz, said that he had no more to say and was finished with recording his statement for the case.
Ijaz had been previously asked to appear before the Supreme Court of Pakistan but he had refused to fly over from the United Kingdom stating that he feared his security would be at stake in Pakistan. Therefore, Ijaz had been recording his statement in London
through a video link.
After the statement of Ijaz had been recorded, the concerned authorities were asked by the judicial commission of Pakistan to submit all the data of telephone bills of the former Pakistani ambassador to the US.
Ijaz commented on the details of the case in the following manner while talking to the reporters: “I can confirm that the two people that are referred to in the document are… The army chief, who received a call from Zardari, essentially asking him to stand
the F-16s down that had been scrambled to take care of the US helicopters in Pakistani airspace. As far as I know, it was Kayani and Zardari that had that conversation. It’s pretty clear.”
The memo gate scandal came into the lime light after the America based Pakistani businessman alleged that he had been given a memo by the former Pakistani ambassador to the United States in order to deliver a message to the US. According to the memo, the
Pakistani government ruled by the Pakistan People’s Party wanted the US to intervene in order to reign in the military of Pakistan as the government feared a coup might take place. The unsigned memo feared that the Pakistani military would want to over throw
the government after the death of Osama bin Laden.
After these claims were made, Hussain Haqqani gave in his resignation from office so that the memo gate scandal could be resolved efficiently.
