PM vows to protect women rights; address at Kinnaird College for women Lahore

Lahore: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said today that his government has taken various steps to protect women rights in Pakistan. He was addressing the students and teachers at the annual convocation of Kinnaird College for
women in Lahore.

Referring to the measures the PPP led coalition government has taken to protect women’s basic rights in Pakistan, the prime minister said, “The present democratic government has introduced various legislative measures such as ‘Women
Protection from Harassment at Workplace Act 2010, Amendment in Section 509 of the PPC, Acid Crime Prevention Act 2011, the Prevention of anti-Women Practices Act 2011 and Fund for Women in Distress and Detention Act 2011.”

However, while highlighting these important legislative achievements for women uplift, Gilani admitted that these new laws were less likely to benefit unless supported by economic empowerment of the women. In this regards, speaking
of another major step taken by his government, the PM said, “You may be aware that the National Commission on Status of Women has become a fully autonomous institution both financially as well as administratively.”

He said that all these steps well exhibited the fact that his government was committed towards taking sincere efforts to address women-related issues and to ensure their greater participation in the national mainstream.
