Pakistan strives to achieve sustainable development; PM Gilani says at Boao forum

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, while speaking at the Boao Forum for Asia 2012, has said that Pakistan is striving to achieve sustainable development. He said that in his leadership, the country has developed a new social safety
network that, through using modern technologies, is benefiting poorest of the society.

He said, “While we pass through this difficult transition towards stability, we have made special efforts to reach out to vulnerable groups. We have started a social safety net programme that targets the poor. It uses modern technology
and has been recognized by international agencies for its transparnacy and effectiveness. We have provided Rs. 800 billion to the provinces for programmes to allow more funding for the social sector”.

The PM, expecting that Pakistan to be driven on the way to economic growth and prosperity, said the country has a four point agenda of a new growth strategy. He said, “To ensure sustainable development, Pakistan has developed a
new growth strategy. The key aspects of this strategy are:

One,                Preservation of economic stability, fiscal balance and job                                         creation.

Two,               Incentives for the private sector to compete globally.

Three,             An investment regime that is liberal. For example in Pakistan foreigners are welcome to participate in any sector with any level of equity. There are no restrictions on the
movement of capital and there are no requirements for local partnership.

Four,               Initiatives for deepening economic relations. For example, tariffs liberalization with China, a new Transit Trade Agreement with Afghanistan, steps towards MFN for India, and
regional projects in gas pipelines and communication.

Five,                A renewed focus on climate change and preservation of environment. This includes waste management, renewable energy and water conservation.”

The prime minister said that while working this new development vision, Pakistan was to benefit from the experiences of China.
