Pasha denies any plans of military coup after Osama’s death

The former ISI chief Ahmed Shuja Pasha has recently given statements in which he said that the military of Pakistan was not planning any coup after the death of Osama bin Laden by the United States. It had been indicated in the memo gate scandal that the
government of Pakistan ruled by the Pakistan People’s Party had feared that the military of Pakistan was planning a coup in the country.

Pasha made the following statements on the matter: "If there was a threat, the ISI would have known about it…I wanted to know about the author of the memo and directed a source to contact Mansoor Ijaz, who agreed to meet me and share details but outside
Pakistan and the US. I saw probably 35 blackberry Messages on Ijaz’s mobile which were exchanged between him and Haqqani."

Mansoor Ijaz, the America based Pakistani businessman had alleged that the former Pakistani ambassador to the United States had passed on a memo to the US which asked for the help of the superpower in order to reign in the military of Pakistan. The memo
indicated that it had originated from some high ranking government office in Pakistan despite the fact that it was unsigned. The reason for asking for the reigning in of the military of Pakistan was because the government of Pakistan ruled by the Pakistan
People’s Party was concerned that a coup may take place because of the death of Osama bin Laden.

The former Pakistani ambassador to the United States, Hussain Haqqani, was scheduled to appear before the memo commission on April 5th, Thursday.

Haqqani’s application had stated that the SC should pass an order allowing the commission to record his statement through similar facilities extended to Mansoor Ijaz. The memo commission had earlier denied a request by Haqqani to record his testimony via
video link, but had advised the former ambassador to forward his request to the apex court.

The memo gate scandal initially took the country by storm when it came to light last year but it is now gradually losing heat.

Though Ijaz had also claimed that the military was planning a coup after the killing of bin Laden, Pasha told the commission that he rejected the businessman’s statement.
