Knee injury to keep Dusty Payne sidelined for most part of the 2012 ASP World Tour

Hawaiian professional surfer Dusty Payne is expected to stay out of action for most part of the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Title Series due to an injured knee.

The 23-year-old Maui shredder is an exciting part of the elite tour, promising a heavy dose of thrilling action every time he takes on his opponents. However, the fans have been forced to wait longer than they expected to get a chance to watch the young sensation in action.

In an exclusive interview to Surfline, Payne admitted that he was uncertain about when he would return to professional surfing again, though he did optimistically added that he would surely be back in the waves before the end of this year.

He conceded that he has been hitting the waves lately with his friends even though that will not be having a positive effect on the recovery of his knee. However, the temptation to ride the juicy waves appearing at his home-break has gotten the better of him and thus he often joins his friends for a fun session.

He conceded that his surfing has been a bit off lately and will surely take time to get back to the level where he wants it to be. Rather than pushing himself hard to try and join the prestigious ASP surfers in the campaign for the coveted ASP World Title, Payne is taking it easy and decided to stay out of competition until his knee is fully healed.

In a question to how he actually injured his knee, the Hawaiian surfer explained, “I did it up in Santa Cruz during the Cold Water Classic. It was my first heat in the event and I did a little lein air and backwash hit me as I landed and jammed the foot back upwards and compressed it really bad. I kept surfing on it ’cause I pretty much had to requalify.”

An MRI of the knee was followed by doctor’s recommendation for rest, which was ignored by Payne. Satisfied with his performance at Cold Water Classic, he went on to compete in the Triple Crown series. This continued to put strain on his knees before eventually forcing him out of action.

Payne will not be competing at the Lower Trestles and Brazil stop of the 2012 ASP World Title, setting the healing of the injured knee as his first priority.
