Steady Kolkata down Deccan Chargers

An all round performance from the Kolkata Knight Riders left Deccan Chargers winless at the bottom of the table as KKR climbed up to third spot with four wins after seven games. Chargers are yet to register a point in this season’s IPL and have played five
games in all so far.

Knight Riders won the toss and chose to field first under overcast Sky. Kumar Sangakkara and Shikhar Dhawan added 37 for the first wicket before the skipper departed for 12 from 15 balls. Parthiv Patel was next to go for 23 in the form of a run-out reducing
the Chargers to 81/2.

Cameron White, who came into the side at the expense of all-rounder, Daniel Christian, made only 10 before leaving Dhawan’s hand with the score on 95. Dhawan finally lost his wicket for a well made 50 from as many balls that included 4 fours and 1 six.

JP Duminy managed only 16 runs from 15 balls and failed to accelerate the score as the home side made only 126 from their allotted 20 overs. Lakshmipathy Balaji and Sunil Narine picked up two wickets each while one wicket each were picked up by Brett Lee
and Rajat Bhatia.

Needing 127 to win, KKR lost Brendon McCullum early for 10 before Mavinder Bisla and Gautam Gambhir added 28 for the second wicket. Bisla lost his stumps after failing to read Amit Mishra’s top spinner. He made 10 runs.

Gambhir was out for 30 after he offered a simple chance at mid-off to Sangakkara. Yousaf Pathan’s woes continued as he struck one six before getting cleaned up by Ankit Sharma. Jacques Kallis’ stay at the crease finally ended as the all-rounder was picked
up by his South African teammate, Dale Steyn for 23 leaving KKR at 105-5.

Manoj Tiwary and Debabrata Das saw their team through with Tiwary remaining not-out on 30 and Das on 9. Steyn picked up two wickets while one wicket apiece were bagged by Sharma, Mishra and Anand Rajan.

Fast bowler, Lee was declared the Man of the Match for his economical bowling figures of 4-0-15-1. KKR will next play the Chargers again on April 24 but this time the teams will meet in Kolkata.
