Spain’s Gony Zubizarreta managed to clinch victory in the fourth heat of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME Nike Lowers Pro’s Round 3 (Round of 96) that went down at the well-known beach-break of Lower Trestles in San Clemente, California, on Tuesday, May 1.

The ideal result for Zubizarreta carried him through into the next round (Round of 48) of the event. New Zealand’s Billy Stairmand missed out on victory, but his runner-up position was enough to see him through into the fourth round as well.

The atmosphere at Lower Trestles turned out to be pretty electric on the opening day of the latest ASP PRIME event as a huge field comprising of local as well as international talent were going at each other while pursuing the prestigious Nike Lowers Pro title. The surfing conditions had not turned out to be too friendly though the clean two-to-four foot waves on offer at the primary event site still offered a reasonable amount of scoring opportunities to those who were willing to identify them on time. Even though the frequency of these potential scoring opportunities was not that low, four surfers competing for the same waves was a pretty intense sight to watch.

The four-man battle between Zubizarreta, Stairmand, South Africa’s Royden Bryson and Germany’s Nic Von Rupp in the fourth heat of Round 3 featured plenty of the fore-mentioned excitement.

All four surfers showed urgency in their hunt for decent scores, all set to pounce on whatever opportunity presented itself. However, Zubizarreta soon managed to take an upper hand in the battle after locking of couple of relatively juicy waves and using them to showcase a few of his stylish moves. The effort carried him to a heat-total of 14.60 points, which eventually served to seal the fate of the battle in his favour.

Stairmand hardly allowed his rival to relax during the course of the battle, pushing himself real hard during his search of good scores. Finishing with a heat-total of 13.94 points, the Kiwi rider was eventually forced to settle for runner-up place.

Bryson and Von Rupp rounded out the bottom-two positions after finishing with a heat-total of 13.54 and 12.97 points respectively, consequently getting removed from the contention for the event title.
