Good hygiene can help prevent dengue

Principal Post Graduate Medical Institute Professor Dr Tariq Salahuddin has said that only hygienic lifestyle can help us get rid of dengue so government, media, NGOs and representatives of civil society must come up to sensitise public against dengue to
eradicate this menace the earliest.

He said this while addressing a symposium at LGH on the topic "How dengue affects mother and child health during pregnancy," on Thursday.

Among others, Professor A Waseem Yousuf, Professor Javed Akram, Professor Rakhshanda Tayyab, Professor Muhammad Aslam, Professor Muhammad Yaqoob Qazi, Professor Nusrat Jehan, Professor Humayun Iqbal, Professor Shahina Asif and Professor Khalid Bashir
spoke on the occasion.

Professor Tariq said that dengue attack was quite unexpected last year but this year it can be managed through better planning, effective preventive measures and taking advantage of last year’s experiments.

He said that Chief Minister Punjab Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif drew a line before dengue by stopping it with the help of dengue experts from Thailand, Sri Lanka and with the full support of all the government departments.

He stressed the need to wipe out this disease from the province by acting upon the policy of Chief Minister in letter and spirit.

Other experts while addressing the participants said that in case of dengue attack on a pregnant woman; usually the child remains safe however expected women should keep in contact with their doctors and go through regular medical tests.

They said that pregnant ladies should approach to government hospital instead of some local dias so that case can be processed in safe hands.

Professor Mohammad Aslam said that new born babies and children can be exposed to fever and spots on their body in case of dengue attach however these symptoms can be vanished within some days usually.

He said that dengue patients should not take excess doses of medicine.

The experts also stressed the participant doctors to sensitise the patients and general public about the preventive measures and hygienic steps to be adopted at homes especially women should be properly educated as they are responsible for keeping their
homes neat and clean.
