KKR’s victory a result of team effort, says Gautam Gambhir

Kolkata Knight Riders Gautam Gambhir has said that an excellent team effort was the prime reason behind his team’s success in the fifth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The Knight Riders beat Chennai Super Kings in the finale to ensure the title. It was a high scoring match at MA Chidambaram Stadium, where the track was good for batting.

After electing to bat first, the Super Kings posted a huge total of 190 runs on the board. Suresh Raina scored a magnificent knock of 73 runs while Michael Hussey smashed a fantastic fifty at the top order. Murali Vijay also
continued his good run and added crucial 42 runs to the total.

In reply, the Riders were awesome with the bat. Despite the fact that Gambhir lost his wicket cheaply, CSK failed to put Kolkata under pressure. Manvinder Bisla clattered 89 runs whereas Jacques Kallis played a superb inning
of 69 runs. As a result of an excellent effort by the two right-handers, Kolkata easily won the contest by five wickets.

Enormously delighted over his side’s effort, Gambhir stated that Kolkata’s win has proved that cricket is a team game in which every individual has to contribute.

"It’s not about me or that I got out early. It is about eleven people who took the field. The way Bisla batted, the maturity and experience that Jacques showed and the cameos from Shakib Al Hasan and Manoj Tiwary at the end.
It’s not about how you start, it’s how you finish. Those performances won the game for us," Gambhir said.

He added, "Since the first press conference I did, I’ve said I hate to talk about individuals. It was not about Sunil Narine. KKR has never been about one individual, whether that’s me or someone else. There has been a lot of
talk about my form.”

“I got a hundred in Bangladesh, I had a decent ODI series, but it was not about that. We all wanted to prove to the nation that cricket is a team sport and credit should go to the team. If you want individual credit you should
play tennis, badminton or some individual sport, not a team sport such as cricket.”
