In order to clear the filthy image of the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP), the government has made it clear that it was not going to take any radical steps against the judiciary.

The Foreign Ministry called all diplomats posted in Pakistan to remove their fears about the exacerbating confrontation between the judiciary and the executive.

Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar and Law Minister Farooq H Naek made efforts to dispel the impression that the country was heading towards any major constitutional or political turmoil.

Their emphasize was over  the persisting controversy between the two institutions, the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) implementation case.

The latest development came after a day when the top court of the country gave the newly elected prime minister a period of two-week to inform whether or not he will write a letter to Swiss authorities to reopen graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.

The ministry issued a press note saying that it hosted a briefing for diplomats on “Foreign Policy Priorities of the Government”.

Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar informed the guests about the smooth transition to a newly-elected prime minister and the government’s commitment to strengthen the democratic system in the country.

The statement quoting the foreign minister said the government was committed to develop an independent judicial system and respect for rule of law.

Some analysts believe that the briefing was organized in light of growing concerns in major countries about the future of democratic system in the face of the staining civil-judicial confrontation.

A week ago, the Supreme Court of Pakistan disqualified its prime minister in the contempt of court case for defying its ruling to write a letter to Swiss authorities to reopen corruption cases against President Zardari.

Flurries of speculations have been around the circles that the ruling Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) was mulling preempt the Supreme Court.

Among rumors one is that the government is establishing a federal judicial body through a constitutional amendment to curtail the powers of the apex court to interfere in the constitutional matters.

Although Law Minister Farooq H Naek dismissed the impression that the government is going to cut the powers of the judiciary, it is working to cope with the situation.
