Senior doctors join hands with Young Doctor Association

In a bid to show solidarity with Young Doctor Association (YDA), senior doctors at the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) shut all departments at the hospital excluding Emergency Ward.

While addressing a news conference, they have demanded that apprehended and house-arrest young doctors be freed at the earliest.

Dr Ijaz Ahsan, the president of Medical Teachers Association (MTA) at PIC, announced that senior doctors withdrew their services from all departments, including the Outpatient Department (OPDs) and Indoor Departments in support of YDA.

He observed, “Young Doctors are the backbone of our system. All arrested young doctors, particularly young doctors of PIC should be released immediately”.

They were of the opinion that currently deputed doctors at the hospital were inexpert and could not handle heart patients. He noted, “It takes a doctor 10 years to do FCPS and then another five-year’s training to become a cardiologist. How could you expect new doctors to come and replace those who have already completed their training?”

The MTA president continued that only a couple of doctors were on duty in the Emergency Ward at Punjab Institute of Cardiology. He informed the media that they were abused and threatened by the patients and their attendants as they failed to handle the situation in the absence of junior doctors.

He made it clear that senior doctors were in their 50s and could not do rigorous work round the clock. It was the reason they were demanding that their doctors should be released immediately.

In his view, the provincial government was enticing patients and the media by showing that they deployed army doctors at all hospitals.

Young Doctors Association (YDA) office bearer of PIC Dr Sami Ijaz said that there had been no problems at the Emergency during the young doctor’s strike as most OPD patients had been treated there.

He said by conducting raids and arresting doctors the government had forced them to boycott and withdraw their services from the Emergency and Indoor as well.

Representatives of the Paramedical Alliance of PIC and Young Nurses Association (YNA) also supported the MTA and announced that they will stop working at PIC.
