David Haye: Boxing is about brawling and profiting from brawling!

Former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye will take on his archrival Dereck Chisora on July 14 at the West Ham’s Upton Park Stadium in east London, in a fight which many out there believe represents a nadir for boxing. However, Haye doesn’t agree with the fact as he believes almost everyone wants to see a fight like this.

Haye and Chisora literally came down to brawl in Munich in February, when they got into an ugly brawl at a post-fight press conference which followed Chisora’s twelve-round unanimous defeat to Vitali Klitschko.

Chisora’s boxing license was withdrawn after the brawl and he was also fined heavily by the WBC whereas no charges were brought against Haye as he had already announced his retirement from the sport last year.

Both fighters are now fighting each other without having a boxing license from the British Boxing Board of Control. Therefore, many out there are describing Haye’s meeting with Chisora as ‘The Sham at West Ham’.

Perhaps this is a reason why Haye, who is commonly known as the Hayemaker, has come out to speak about the fight.

“That’s what boxing is: boxing is about brawling and profiting from brawling. People want to pay to see a fight. Two boxers having a brawl in a press conference – big deal,” Haye said this week to Boxing Correspondent, Gareth A Davies, while sweating from his torso at the south London gym where he works with trainer Adam Booth.

“People want to see it as much as they think it’s an outrage. And if they do think it’s an outrage, that’s their prerogative. Don’t tune into the fight. The biggest critics of this fight will be tuning in, they will be subscribing to BoxNation, they will be buying tickets.”

He added, “A lot of people don’t really understand it. They think it’s some kind of unlicensed fight. As long as people are horrified it means that it’s an event and people want to see it. That’s boxing.”

Well, all said and done, Haye and Chisora’s fight, which has been sanctioned by the Luxemburg Boxing Federation, has certainly created an enormous hype among but let’s see if it really lives up to it.
