Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira has made it clear that he hadn’t said the government will not write the letter to the Swiss authorities against President Asif Ali Zardari.

He, however, said that the government’s stance was that writing letter was unconstitutional until Asif Ali Zardari holds office of the presidency.

Earlier on Thursday, the Supreme Court of Pakistan ordered that Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf must dispatch letter to Swiss authorities for the reopening of graft cases against President Zardari until July 25.

It is to mention here that the SC also issued notice to Kaira for his press conference for his remarks on Swiss letter during a press conference.

The court also sought record of the press conference Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira addressed about writing the letter to Switzerland.

Speaking to the media the minister said, “I never said that the party’s stance was against writing the letter. I had said that the federal cabinet would decide on the issue. My party respected all institutions of the country, including the judiciary”.

Kaira continued that the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) didn’t have any conflict with the judiciary. He added, “The PPP has given many sacrifices for democracy…all the institutions will have to work together to strengthen it”.

In his view, the government couldn’t accept any undemocratic behavior in the country and the parliament will defend the system. He also stated that Attorney General Irfan Qadir had given some arguments in the court over the matter.

It is vital to mention here that the apex court had disqualified Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani as prime minister on June 19 after convicting him of contempt on April 26 for defying writing the letter to Swiss authorities to reopen the multi-million-dollar cases against his boss, President Asif Ali Zardari.

After which, Raja Pervez Ashraf was elected as the new prime minister and he was too asked to implement over the ruling of the court.
