Unscheduled power outages irk masses across country

Despite tall claims unscheduled loadshedding is continued across the country and likewise protesters are too in action against prolonged hours of power outages.

Some areas of the country are observing power shut down during Sehr and Iftar timings, which is making their lives hard amid extreme humid temperature. The government, however, seems helpless in providing relief to the masses during the holy month.

The authorities concerned failed to implement government’s orders to end unscheduled loadshedding across the country despite all claims and notices.

On Sunday, President Asif Ali Zardari took notice of the power outages during the Sehr and Iftar timings but to no avail. He summoned a meeting to sort out a plan to end unscheduled load shedding but scheduled power outages will continue across the country.

Due to the excessive use of air conditioners the consumption of electricity has increased up to 18,600 megawatts whereas the production of electricity is not more than 13,300MW due to the insufficient supply of fuel and gas.

As the weather becomes hot and dry, the shortfall has reached 6,500MW. The system is facing problems due to which transformers are not even working properly due to the increase in consumption.

According to National Transmission and Dispatch Company Limited (NTDC) officials, construction on Muzaffargarh transmission system was in last stage while electricity will soon be generated through Lalpir thermal power plant.

This past weekend was one of the worst ever for most people. Not only was it muggy because of the monsoon, but people observed a long and difficult fast because of Ramazan.

According to the reports, oil-fired plants in Muzaffargarh and the Chashma-II reactor were undergoing repairs, but the real reason was the failure to implement the government decision to enhance gas supply to the power sector from the existing 300 million cubic feet per day (MMCFPD) to 700 MMCFPD.

It is a time for all leaders, irrespective of political affiliation; to must unite to overcome the crisis otherwise they will face vis-Ă -vis response in elections.
