In quite an unprecedented move, the lawmakers from coalition parties lashed at the government for its failure to overcome electricity crisis, seeking resignation from Minister for Water and Power Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar.

In the second session of the Upper House of the parliament, ANP (Awami National Party) Senators urged the government to kick-start the debate on the current power outages.

Senator Zahid Khan, who was greatly irked by the prolonged hours of loadshedding, criticized the absence of all concerned ministers from the house.

Terming their attitude irresponsible and negligent, he said they (ministers) have no regard for the Senate.

Later, Senator Haji Adeel of ANP staged a walkout along with his party colleagues and some members from the opposition parties.

He observed, “If they (ministers and prime minister) have no regard for the Parliament, they should resign from their posts immediately. Ministers who are consistently absent from the Senate proceedings do not deserve to be ministers”.

He stated that despite the government’s earlier promises severe power outages were being witnessed during Sehar and Iftar timings. The masses have no other options except to take to the streets against the incumbent, he added.

The ANP leader also flayed severe criticism at Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) for not joining them in the token walkout against the blackouts.

Senator Tahir Hussain Mashhadi of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) also targeted the government, saying people were running out of patience over its incapability to address the issue of power outages.

He also didn’t spare Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf and termed him king of darkness. He remarked, “The person who could not resolve the power crisis in four years has now been made the prime minister”.

Expressing resentment he asked how the premier will intend to keep his recent promise of doing away the load shedding within eight months.

In the meantime, as many as sixteen ministers of PML-Q reportedly warned to quit his ministries in protest of the extensive power outages across the country.

As the elections are approaching, many coalition partners are mulling to part ways with the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) for saving its skin prior to facing the masses.
