Pakistan needs to revise transport system

Transportation system, which has not developed properly to meet the requirements of rising population, is quite pathetic in the country.

In rural, urban and semi-urban, the road communication is already in poor shape and was further worsened by the 2010-11 floods. The Ground Line of Communication (GLoC) also helped in further destruction of the many national highways.

In the meantime, the country has a high rate of accidents. Unfortunately, the cause of the accidents remains unknown in 90 per cent cases and responsible people are free to increase digits.

Sindh Transport Department formulated a Transport Policy which shared horrific results. The country has a high fertility rate of 19 deaths per 10, 000 vehicles; out of 65 are pedestrians.

Due to lack of maintenance a safety precautions, most the main roads as well as link roads are widely damaged.

The roads in Pakistan are lack of shoulders and medians while vehicles with improper indicators carry no punishment.

Donkey carts, rickshaws and bicycles move on the main roads and highways without reflector and might cause major accidents.

In major cities, almost half of the road is being covered by parking vehicles and carts which incline to traffic jamming and eventually a loss of time.

Fuel consumption and health hazards due to air and noise pollution are other major problems of the traffic jams in the country. Such repercussions increase volume to environmental degradation.

The role of transport departments in the country over such degradation and lack in traffic rule enforcement is open to discussion.

The construction projects should be started considering the climate so as to shun any weather interruption. We start construction of roads in the monsoon season which is again questionable.

In order to improve the situation, the government of Pakistan and all transportation departments need to be very conscientious and should take safety steps to refine all the issues.

They should also raise the transportation development graph according to the laws and standards.

It has been acknowledged worldwide that better transportation is a leading cause of wealth and prosperity of a country.
